The Regional Gothic aesthetic first appeared on Tumblr in the January of 2015. The Aesthetic was truly a continuation of the Gothic literary scene, heavily relying on authors such as H.P. Lovecraft and William Faulkner to combine horror with the local culture of the time. Regional Gothic caught on with such an intensity that despite many people moving on from Tumblr the aesthetic has remained alive and well.
One well known example of this aesthetic is the movie The Village (2004).
